The John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge opened to traffic in 1867 as the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time. An icon of beauty and structural mastery, it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1975. Connecting Cincinnati, Ohio, and Covington, Kentucky, the bridge serves as a vital link for pedestrians, vehicles, and cyclists. It’s not just a passageway, but a place where people commute, play, and gather, all while it beautifies our skyline and riverfront.
When pedestrians and vehicles cross the bridge, it sings. The hum created by the grates under passing cars, the vibrations from suspension cables, and the atmosphere around the bridge create a soundscape that’s iconic and unique. So, at PLAY Audio Agency, we decided to make it into an instrument.
We set out to capture the natural sounds of the Roebling Bridge—the hum of vehicles, the resonance of the suspension cables, even the metallic tones of the pedestrian railings. Each of these elements has a character of its own, and we recorded them to create something truly original. After processing and sampling these recordings, we transformed them into a series of playable instruments.
The piece we composed using these sounds is entirely performed on instruments created from the Roebling Bridge itself. It’s a tribute to the energy, optimism, and evergreen modernity that this landmark represents in the Queen City.
